New York

USA

New York is one of those cities that announces itself. The skyline as you come in to land, the noise and energy the moment you step outside, the sheer density of possibility in every direction. There is nowhere quite like it, and first-time visitors almost universally describe the same feeling: that it is exactly as they imagined it and nothing like they expected, at the same time.

New York rewards repeat visits enormously. The first time you tick off the sights. The second time you find your neighbourhood. By the third visit you start to feel like a local.

Where to stay

Midtown Manhattan is the classic base for first-time visitors, putting you close to Central Park, the High Line, Times Square and the main museum mile. The Upper West Side is slightly quieter and beautifully positioned between Central Park and the Hudson River. Lower Manhattan around Tribeca and SoHo is brilliant for those who want to be in the thick of the city's food and culture scene. Brooklyn, particularly DUMBO and Williamsburg, offers stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and a more neighbourhood feel.

What to do

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, known as the Met, is one of the great museums of the world and could absorb a full two days. The MoMA has the finest collection of modern art anywhere. Walk the High Line, the elevated park built on a disused railway line. Take the Staten Island Ferry for free and spectacular views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline.

Eat in Chinatown, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, explore the extraordinary food market at Chelsea Market, and spend a morning in Central Park. An evening at a Broadway show, a jazz club in the West Village or a rooftop bar with views over the city are experiences you will not forget.

New York is not a city you see. It is a city you live in for a week, and even then you only scratch the surface.

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are the ideal times to visit. April, May, September and October bring pleasant temperatures and beautiful light. Summers are hot and humid but full of energy, with outdoor films, free concerts and the city at its most vibrant. Christmas in New York, with the skating rinks, the department store windows and the festive atmosphere, is genuinely magical. January and February are cold but hotel prices drop significantly.

Getting there

Direct flights from major UK airports to JFK, Newark and LaGuardia serve New York year-round. Flight times are around seven to eight hours. The AirTrain and LIRR connect JFK to Manhattan, and taxis or rideshare apps are widely available from all three airports.
